Torre del Mar (20,000 inhabitants) is located on the coast and has a lovely wide boulevard. This covers almost 4 kilometres and has -quite special in Spain- a nice smooth cycle path! Officially the city is part of Velez-Malaga. This is the capital of the ´comarca´ district La Axarquia (eastern part of the province of Malaga), but Torre del Mar is located south of the A7 highway. From Malaga Airport it is approximately a 30-40 minute drive.
The centre is fairly straightforward and not very old. It has a number of nice shopping streets with many individual shops. Not too much franchise, so. Torre del Mar is becoming more and more popular with foreign tourists and home buyers. It has a lot to offer; good beaches, the regional hospital, the shopping mall, a water park, golf course, good infrastructure, etc. On the other hand, in Torre del Mar you will find relatively fewer foreign holidaymakers and tourism is largely based on Spaniards from cities such as Malaga, Cordoba, Granada and Madrid.
Beaches and beach clubs Torre del Mar
As Torre del Mar itself does not really have any historical sights, the biggest attractions are the boulevard with its extensive beaches. In recent years, the offer of attractive catering establishments has improved enormously and the city has definitely put itself on the map with the annual Weekend Beach Festival. This summer music festival is extremely popular with mainly young people from all over Andalusia.
In the summer months, Café del Mar (west of the lighthouse on the beach) is a popular open-air disco dancing. You can still eat here before the dancing hours. Bahía de Tanit Beach Club is also nice. You can easily park in this entertainment area. You drive here with your car on the paved beach. This area is also used, for example, for larger music festivals.
As a counterpart, Torre -so far known as the first in Europe- recently has a special senior beach next to the beach pavilion / chiringuito Varela.
El Ingenio shopping center
There is a large modern shopping mall, El Ingenio, right on the motorway at the Torre del Mar / Velez-Malaga exit. This houses a hypermarket (Eroski), cinema (Spanish) and about 20 shops. Well-known names such as C&A, Dunnes Store, H&M, Casa, Zara, Berska and Mango. Upstairs are a number of restaurants and fast-food outlets.
The El Ingenio shopping centre has an important regional function, offers good parking facilities and is open from Monday to Saturday from 10 to 10 (without siesta). In 2020, it was extensively renovated, whereby the Eroski was reduced in size to offer more diversity through 6 additional shops.
Tourist attractions Torre del Mar
Close to El Ingenio you´ll find a popular water park (Aquavelis) . Aquavelis is only opening in the summer months during the Spanish school holidays. It´s always busy and most families already stand in line in front of the entree before opening time. See for online tickets and special discounts (for example in combination with a Virtual Reality experience) the website of Water park Aquavelis.
Golf course Baviera Golf Torre del Mar
Baviera Golf is the only golf course on the eastern Costa del Sol between Rincon de la Victoria and Motril. It offers 18 holes and beautiful views of the Mediterranean. Baviera Golf was designed by star player José María Cañizares, with a record of 5 tournaments on the European circuit, 2 world championships, and several Ryder Cup entries. Around the golf course, various new residential areas have been developed for enthusiasts in various price ranges. Baviera Golf is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00 and workshops and lessons are held regularly.
Caleta de Velez
The coastal town of Caleta de Velez is located east of Torre del Mar and also falls under the Municipality of Vélez-Malaga. It has 3,700 inhabitants and the main feature of Caleta is the industrial fishing port with fish market. This one is nice to visit, especially because a number of very good fish restaurants are located around the harbour. These buy their fresh fish specialities directly from the auction, which gives you a lot of value for money. My favourite is the Chinchin restaurant!
Almayate -west of Torre del Mar- has 1,800 inhabitants and consists of Almayate Costa and Almayate pueblo. It is best known for its nudist campsite and nudist beach. There are also several horse riding schools on the beach where you can take horseback riding lessons or book a wonderful ride on the beach. In addition, you can also go-karting in this place along the N340 coastal road.
Police office for fiscal NIE document
Do you want to buy a house in the region of Torre del Mar, become a resident (green card), tax resident (income tax) or open a bank account, for example? Then you need the fiscal NIE document (Numero Identificacion Extranjeros). This number and also the green residence card you must request at the local police station. Check the current application procedures as they change regularly. If necessary, the NIE number can also be applied for via a notarial power of attorney, for example by the lawyer who takes care of the purchase of your house.
