The Axarquia is one of the 9 districts (comarcas) of the province of Malaga, next to the border with the eastern province of Granada. The capital is Velez-Malaga as the capital. (This Municipality also includes Almayate, Benajarafe, Caleta de Vélez, Cajiz, Chilches, Lagos, Mezquitilla, Torre del Mar, Trapiche, Triana and Valle-Niza.)
The Axarquia lies on the eastern Costa del Sol and because of the ideal climate there´s a lot of fruit and vegetable cultivation. The most important source of income however is tourism and the region has great beaches. Nerja and Torrox have the best climate of Europe with around 300 days of sun a year.
The hinterland is very popular with the northern Europeans for a holiday or buying a second home. In general, residents have a positive attitude towards foreign investors. Aging and the depopulation of the villages in Spain is a problem and foreign buyers are reviving the economy of the villages.
The main towns are Nerja, Torrox, Frigiliana, Competa, Torre del Mar, Caleta de Velez, Algarrobo, Rincon de la Victoria, Alcaucin, La Viñuela, Periana, Sayalonga and Comares.
