La Herradura (4,000 inhabitants) means ‘horseshoe’ and is a part of Almuñecar on the Costa Tropical in the province of Granada. It is a small quiet place in a beautiful bay on the Mediterranean sea, 17 kilometres east of Nerja. Between Nerja-Maro and La Herradura you find the nature reserve Parque Natural de los Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo. This impressive part of the Sierra de la Almijara mountains runs through a green valley all the way to the sea to the nudist beach Playa Cantarijan and the rocky coastline. This coast with various waterfalls and coral reefs is also protected.
There are not many catering establishments in the centre, but you can relax on the wide beach. The place is also popular for diving, kayaking or snorkelling. Because of its beauty, La Herradura has become quite popular amongst northern European house buyers in the higher price segment.
Halfway along the boulevard are some chiringuitos (fish restaurants), of which ‘El Chambao de Joaquin’ is highly recommended due to its beautiful location, despite the slightly higher price. A large number of outdoor fitness equipment has recently been installed on the beach itself and there are also some playgrounds for children. La Herradura is a mainly Spanish seaside resort, which means that the tourist season is mainly concentrated in July and August.
El Castillo is a military fort which dates from 1771. Popular urbanization are Cantarriján, los Cármenes del Mar, Cerro Gordo, Los Corrales, la Cuesta del Marchante, El Enclave, la Marina del Este, Mezquita, El Nogal, Las Palomas, Peña Parda, San Antonio, San Nicolás, Punta de la Mona and Las Terrazas.

Cerro Gordo
To the west of La Herradura lies Cerro Gordo. This 325 metres high mountain offers beautiful views over the rocky coast of the Costa Tropical. At the very top is an expensive residential area, Punta de la Mona. It has a viewing point, a restaurant ´Mirador de Cerro Gordo´ and a lighthouse. At the bottom of Cerro Gordo are the beaches Playa Los Berengueles (Bahia del Vapor) of 400 meters, Playa El Muerto of 250 meters and the ravine Cotobro.
Recreational harbour Marina del Este
Flat beyond the bay is a marina ‘Marina del Este‘. You get to the other side of the mountain via a winding road. The harbour is not visible from the road, so keep an eye out for the “Marina del Este” signs. There are a number of restaurants in the harbour and there is a diving school. The 228 berths seem to be quite pricey.
The La Herradura market is on Friday morning (until 2:00 pm, Plaza Nueva).
