Velez-Málaga (70,000 inhabitants) is the capital of the comarca La Axarquía. This concerns the eastern part of the province of Malaga and there are several places covered by this Velez-Malaga, including:

Capital of the Axarquia
The agricultural area around the city produces a lot of Moscatel grapes, known for the Malaga wines. Velez-Malaga is not very touristy and therefore real authentic Spanish. Perhaps partly because the center is quite difficult to reach by car. The historic sights at the top of the city (including a 13th-century Moorish castle Alcazaba la Fortaleza) are a nice climb anyway. For restaurants, it´s better to go to the coastal town of Velez-Malaga, Torre del Mar. Torre is situated south of the A7 highway to Malaga where you find lots of restaurants on the boulevard.
Below the city is a large industrial area (poligono industrial) with a regional function. For example, an indoor playground is located here, Xarquiapark. Fun for the little ones when the weather is not nice. You will also find all kinds of specialty shops for companies and individuals, such as car dealers, hardware stores, furniture stores and an open-fires specialist.
Semana Santa
The parades during Easter week Semana Santa are very atmospheric in this place. There is one procession that takes place in the evening in the dark with candlelight. Very impressive, serene yet popular! A special Semana Santa museum has even been opened. Here you can taste the atmosphere of this religious and very beloved spectacle all year round.
Surroundings of Velez-Malaga
The largest town in the Velez-Malaga district is Torre del Mar on the coast. This place has many amenities such as a great boulevard, a shopping mall (El Ingenio), a regional hospital, a water park, etc.
To the north of Velez is a large lake called La Vinuela which is used as a water reservoir and power station for the whole region. This area is very popular with English and other foreigners for a second home. The view of the lake is therefore beautiful with the mountain La Maroma in the background. La Maroma measures over 2000 meters in height.
