Torrox

Torrox (12,000 inhabitants) is located 40 km east of Malaga on the A7 motorway. From the eastern neighbouring municipality of Nerja, you can also take the N340 coast road which is a fun ride with magnificent views. The town consists of 2 parts, Torrox Costa and Torrox Pueblo which are a few kilometres apart (‘Pueblo’ is north of the motorway).

In contrast to Nerja and Pueblo, Torrox Costa is almost completely flat, which is of course pleasant for seniors or people with reduced mobility. The town in the sunny ´comarca Axarquia has a good mixture of English, German, Dutch, Belgian and Scandinavian tourists.

Torrox Pueblo

Although the village itself on the hill is quite charming and beautifully situated, unfortunately, there are not so many special sights here. That is actually quite a shame because it is an authentic village and according to some, it is less ‘stuffed’ than the photogenic neighbouring village of Frigiliana. So you won´t find too many tourists in Torrox Pueblo, although the amount of restaurants is increasing, especially around the central square.

Countryside

Where you do find plenty of tourists and (winter)-residents are in Torrox Costa (Torrox Park, El Morche and Peñoncillo) and also in the countryside. The house prices here are severely lower than for example in the country of Nerja, Frigiliana or Competa. What is also a nice rural route, on foot or by car, is that from Torrox to Frigiliana. Then stop at the former design hotel/restaurant Los Caracoles (the snails), now owned by the Sevillano restaurant group.

Torrox Costa

Torrox Costa (also known as Conejito or Castillo Bajo) is more oriented towards tourism. Also, it has more high-rise buildings. Despite its less picturesque character, the extended boulevard along the beach is nice to visit. It is wonderful here for walking, jogging, cycling or skating. The boulevard runs from the lighthouse (alongside some ancient excavations of a Roman necropolis) past the large colourful Iberostar hotel. The boulevard has many restaurants. My favourite however is El Desvan de Tete on the other side of the N340 coast road.

El Morche

Nowadays the boulevard has been extended a lot further to El Morche in the west. This is a small town on the coast which belongs to Torrox and nowadays is in demand with home buyers. This is due to some well-priced new build promotions. El Morche has around 2.300 inhabitants.

El Peñoncillo

You will also find nice chiringuitos along the beach in ‘El Peñoncillo‘ (towards the Calaceite urbanisation in the east) of which one has a free bouncy castle for the kids. The Municipality has invested a lot in the development of El Peñoncillo and that has paid off in recent years. The access route from Nerja is now particularly attractive with lots of greenery. They recently constructed a wide sidewalk and even a cycle path. That is why this nice district has recently become very popular with home buyers.

Torrox Park and camping El Pino

The international district much loved by tourists and home buyers on a budget is Torrox Park. It is located slightly off the coast, behind the beach of El Peñonillo in the east. Here is also a pleasant El Pino campsite. The camping owes its name to the pine trees that provide the necessary shade in the balmy summers. There are about 400 pitches and 50 bungalows available.

Cheaper alternative

Another advantage of this town is that the prices of restaurants and the rental/purchase prices of real estate are relatively low. In that regard, Torrox really is a relatively cheap low-budget destination. This makes this place – together with the ideal climate – of course also ideal for winter residents.

Festivities

Torrox is also famous for its culinary migas festival held in December. Migas is a traditional peasant dish consisting of baked breadcrumbs and served in many variations. But like Spanish villages, there´s always a reason to celebrate. An example is the yearly feria and the summerly folk dance and singing Festival de Danza y Coros in august.

Best climate in Europe

Torrox and Nerja officially hold the title of ‘the best climate in Europe‘. The place is also part of the wine route Ruta del Sol y Vino (together with Nerja, Frigiliana and Competa).

  • The market in Pueblo and also in Costa is on Monday morning (until 2:00 pm).
  • Feria: early October
  • Taxi: tel. 952 530 352
