Tarifa & Costa de la Luz

This part of Andalucia has its border on the Atlantic coast and is called Costa de la Luz (the coast of the light). Here it’s definitely less busy than on the Costa del Sol and has different kind of tourists here. The Costa de la Luz starts at Tarifa, the windsurf paradise of Europe that lies only 14 kilometres from Morocco. Every year the world tournament of wind surfing is held here in Tarifa. Tarifa is not big, but it has a beautiful old Moorish centre and there’s a lot of young and alternative people that give this town it’s special laid-back atmosphere. Around Tarifa there are various camping sites.

Special about this area is the constant presence of a firm breeze, wide beaches with dunes, grasslands and pine forest trees. Besides that there are several protected nature areas including the national park La Donana and Parque Natural del Acantilado y Pinar de Barbate (2000 acres). Except from alternative tourists this coast is also loved by all kinds of birds because of it’s great variety in nature.

Along the coast you will find small fishing villages because fishing is the most important source of income in this area. Especially El Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlucar de Barrameda (famous for its horse races on the beach in August) are nice to visit and these lovely towns have a real nice atmosphere. Cadiz (the oldest city of Europe) and Huelva are the only cities along the coast.
