• 170.000 inhabitants, from Nerja 160 km (2.5 hours) Almeria is a laid back harbor city which has known more vivid times in the past. Despite the fact that the city has a harbor and even an airport, the green houses are the main economy recourses. The town actually lies in the middle of nowhere and in the surrounding area you will see many plastic green houses. The biggest attraction of town is the Alcazaba, a partly restored fortress which offers a nice view over town. Like in all other cities near the coast you’ll find shops and restaurants near the boulevard What makes a trip to Almeria interesting is mainly the combination with small trips to the surrounding nature area. About 30 kilometers from town you’ll find Europe’s only dessert with a real cowboy town by the name of ‘Mini-Hollywood’. To the east on the coast is a huge nature area Çabo de Gata which has beautiful quiet beaches. Cabo de Gata is also the name of the closets’ village and the light house on the most south eastern point of Spain. By the way: the direct highway between Almeria and Granada through the dessert and the Alpujarra mountains towards the Sierra Nevada is spectacular. Almeria has a permanent (inside) market that opens from Monday to Saturday. Feria Almeria: end of August |
