Antequera

Culture and history lovers will adore Antequera. From all kinds of architectonical periods you’ll find buildings and churches in this town. The most is ‘barok’ and the old town is officially protected to preserve this cultural heritage. A nice town to walk around in and – as in so many Spanish cities – you’ll find an old castle in the centre.

Antequera lies on a plateau on the foothill of the ‘Pena de los Enamorados’ (Rock of the lovers).

Close to the town lie three well preserved memorial stone graveyards of more than 4000 years old. Another highlight is the extraordinary rocky landscape El Torcal about 13 kilometres from Antequera. This specially formed landscape already exists for more than 150 million years and there are several routes for hikers.

People say Antequera has one of the prettiest Paradores (state hotels in historical buildings) of the whole of Spain. Reservation is necessary (0034 – 952 840 061 and not cheap…but stunning places to stay in for a treat.

In July there's a blues festival in Antequera.

Between Antequera and Ronda lie the mountains of El Chorro with the famous gorge of El Chorro and El Caminito del Rey (The Kings path) or El Camino del Rey. This hikers path runs from Alora to Campillos through this ravine. This wildlife area is not only loved for hiking or climbing, but also for mountain biking anc kayaking.

Also close by: the Lobo Park Antequera, a wolf park, which is nice to visit.
