• 26.000 inhabitants, from Nerja 24 kilometres (21 minutes) Almunecar is one of the biggest places on the Costa Tropical. The beach is divided in two by a Moorish fort or castle which is called San Miguel and also can be visited. Because of the high rise it’s not exactly a beautiful town, but still Almunecar has some old history which you can see in various old remainings, an archaeological museum and a Roman aqueduct. The town has some family attractions: the water park ‘Aqua Tropic’, a new aquarium (with 200 species of fish), the bird park ‘Loro Sexi’ and a botanical garden ‘El Majuelo’ (400 species) from countries like Brazil and Cuba. In Almunecar you can even play paintball or do some archery! For the fans of history there is the Casa de la Cultura / 3000 years of history and even a Bonsai Museum. For people with a good 4-wheel drive 20 kilometres from Almunecar in the mountains lies wild park ‘La Pena Escrita’. The park doesn’t charge an entrance fee and you can find all kinds of wild animals here from wolfs to bears, apes and camels. Not a good suggestion though for people afraid of heights, because it’s so steep that it’s almost hard to park your car, but the views are spectacular. Make sure you don’t have to drive the winding road in rain or darkness (the trip takes longer than you’d expect). And you might even want to bring your own food and drinks, because the restaurant has limited opening hours. In the park you can also rent chalets. The market of Almunecar is on Friday morning and there's also a permanent market hall for food etc. Jazz Festival Almunecar, mid July, www.jazzgranada.net Feria Almunecar: half of August Taxi Almunecar tel. 958 630 017 |
