Donkey sanctuaria |
 | |
On the way to Seville in the village of Fuente de Piedra lies El Refugio del Burrito, a donkey sanctuary for abused and neglected donkeys throughout the whole of Europe (a donkey is a herd animal so it really needs companionship). This foundation is run by English and relies purely on donations. You can get a free tour around the terrain and you’ll be amazed how many different kinds of donkeys there are. If you like you can adopt a donkey or just donate some money to this great initiative.
The foundation also obtained the right to check those donkeys used in tourist attractions in Mijas and it makes sure the owners lose their permission if they don’t take care of the animals.
Also Nerja has his its own small donkey sanctuary, close to the monument west of town towards Torrox. (Besides that, there is also an organisation for cats and dogs which is called CAS).
- The route between the donkey sanctuary in Fuente de Piedra and Ronda is marvellous: a nice combination for a day trip. It’s quite a journey though and in high season temperatures can go up to 46 degrees.
- Ask at the farm whether there are flamingo birds at that time at the lake close by. If the season is right and the lake hasn’t dried, they say you can really see the flamingo birds well. www.elrefugiodelburrito.com
