Walking & Hiking

Horseback riding Scuba-diving

Because of the good all -year round weather, the rich variety in nature and the many different landscapes, Andalucia is perfect for relaxed walking to hard-core tracking. Young or old, beginner or experienced hiker. Traditionally the Spanish take a little walk at the end of the day, in the cities and in the countryside, as do many tourists.

Of course it’s lovely to wander around the picturesque streets in the old town of Nerja, just for fun whenever you feel like it. If you want to walk a little further it is best to head east or west, because walking towards Frigiliana is a real climb (400 metres higher). To the east you can walk on the footpath next to the 340 coast road towards Maro (4 km from Nerja centre) and there’s a possibility to walk partly on a secondary path through the fields. In the mountains behind Maro, there are several official tracking routs (ask at the tourist’s office for an exact plan).

To the west you could walk completely to Torrox Costa (10 kilometres from Nerja), although there is still an area of missing footpath , which means you have to walk on the road for a while. (This footpath will be completed in future when Nerja’s harbour is constructed here.) The first part you can walk on the beach (2 km on Playazo Beach). If you want to turn back after that, you can walk on the footpath from Hotel Marinas de Nerja next to 340 coast road.

Also a nice nature experience: a cool walk through the river Chillar that runs from Frigiliana to Nerja (you need special water shoes for this!). In summer the water is nice and cool and the water usually just gets to 50 cm height. Until late summer it’s really green here and you have lots of shade. With your car you can drive up to the cement factory (through the Almijara urbanisation) and there the water usually starts because the river is mostly dry in town. After 1,5 hours you come to a little reservoir where you can also swim a little, if you wish. After this part it gets steeper and it’s better to walk back down again. (Because of the slippery stones, this doesn’t go as fast as you’d expect.) Eventually there’s also a waterfall, but you have to go to Frigiliana for that and then walk down.

For real walking and tracking holidays (private or organised) though out Andalucia, just have a look on the internet. Nice areas are the Sierra Nevada, Alpujarras, the area around Ronda and around Antequera.

A famous official hiking route is the E4 / GR7 which runs from Tarifa through the biggest part of South Europa (GR stands for Gran Recorridos). The part that runs through Andalucia splits above Malaga into a northern and southern route.

In Spain you also have 'Via Verdes' (Greenways) which are old train routes that have been transformed into hiking and cycling tracks. In Andalucia you find the following Via Verdes:
- Province Jaén:The Olive Oil Greenway 55.0 Km
- Province Cádiz-Sevilla: Sierra Greenway 36.0 Km
- Province Córdoba: Vía Verde de la Subbética Greenway 56.0 Km + Campiña I Greenway 28.0 Km
- Province Sevilla: Sierra Norte de Sevilla Greenway 15.0 Km

There're concrete plans for a new cycling / hiking path from Nerja to Rincon de la Victoria and for a Via Verde from Torre del Mar to Zafarraya.
