Alhambra Granada |

On a hill in the centre of beautiful Granada lies the ‘red castle’, the Alhambra. This impressive complex is in the top 3 of the most visited cultural attractions of Spain and is definitely worth visiting. The Alhambra is the biggest and best known building in Europe with an Arabic architecture. Besides the fact that it’s unusual, pretty and delicately decorated, the Alhambra has great historical significance. The collapse of the Alhambra in 1492 marks the end of 800 years of Moorish ruling in Spain and the beginning of the catholic inquisition.
From the hill on which the Alhambra is situated you have spectacular views over the city and the surrounding area. You can see the photogenic mountains of the Sierra Nevada, with their snow white tops, where you can ski until late spring. The Alhambra is really a complex of different buildings, from various periods, spanning from 1238 to1492. There is also a big arena and stylish gardens that you can walk through for hours (don’t forget your map!). The complex is surrounded by a 4 kilometre long castle wall which not only provided protection from invaders but also prevented the pour inhabitants of Granada seeing the extreme wealth that lay inside the walls.
The most famous part of the Alhambra complex (Palacio Nazaríes) is the area in which the sultans lived with their harems. This is comprised of relatively small, beautifully decorated, spearate buildings, rooms and patios.Lots of water and greenery, as well as many other aesthetically pleasing details means you will find photo opportunities with each step you take. The Arabic influence is found in the mosaic, the carved stones, Arabic figures and the refreshing fountains. The most famous and most photographed part is the Patio los Leones with its many pillars. Through typical Arabic shaped windows you have a memorable view over the old town of Granada, full of character, white houses, cypress and palm trees. Every half hour a new group can enter this part to prevent the place from getting overcrowded. It’s really best to make a reservation with your credit card through the internet site (3 days ahead). If you haven’t made a reservation, then it’s best to be the first ones in the morning because they always keep some extra cards at the entrance. When you approach the city through the Southern highway, just follow the Alhambra signs which lead you to the (paid) parking area. (We wouldn’t advice you to try and find a free space or walk there.) This way also leads you to a beautiful viewing point.
