La Donana & El Rocio

Almeria desert

Close to the Portugese border lies Natural Park La Donana, almost 500 km2 big. This flat nature area has its place on the UNESCO list and was founded officially in 1969 to protect the populations of 360 bird species that yearly find their way to this swamp river delta of Spain’s famous Guadalqivir river. It’s the biggest and most important nature area of Spain because of its rich and unique wildlife. On the border to the sea dunes have formed which are kept in place by pine woods. This area is also a home for a lot of other species like wild horses and bulls. Some species are even on the point of extinction..

The closest place is called El Rocio where at the time of Pentecost a special pilgrim tour is held - La Romeria del Rocio – through this normally protected and forbidden area.

Various excursions are organised in La Donana, although only a quarter of the whole area is open for visitors. Excursions you can do by boat, jeep, horse or simply on foot. In total there a 5 visitor centres. It’s quite a drive (from Malaga 350 kilometres), but really spectacular for real nature lovers. Don’t forget your binoculars and telescopic lens!
