Sierra Nevada & La Alpujarra |
 | |
A tour through the beautiful Sierra Nevada and La Alpujarra is an absolute must for all nature lovers. The mountains of the Sierra Nevada go up to 3.5 thousand metres and are mostly declared as protected wildlife. There are foliage woods as well as pine woods, you’ll find small rivers and impressive rock formations including mountain goats. You can ski, hike, go horseback riding, mountain biking, climbing etc. It’s a paradise for lovers of outdoor sports.
Also the nature area south of the Sierra Nevada – La Alpujarra – is worth visiting. On these foothills you’ll find picturesque villages with tremendously beautiful views where it feels as if time stood still... You really need to take your time though as the narrow winding roads take longer than you may think.
For the Alpujarra tour you leave the Granada highway at ‘Lanjaron / Orgiva’. From there you go through some nice villages (Pampaneira, Bubion, Capileira). These sleepy towns thrive on a small scale on alternative and backpackers tourism. Don’t forget to try the famous dried hams that are made here. Treveles is the highest village at 1475 metres.
The route back takes you on one of the ‘A-roads’ towards the coast, and as you’d probably suspect from the Spanish inlands, the signs are not always put logically so better stay focussed… The road crosses the valley, so you can see the way you just travelled on the other side. If you love driving you could do this tour in one day, but you could also spend the night in a hotel, bed & breakfast or camping site.
