Landscape and coast

LocationHistory

Spain is after Switzerland the highest country of Europe with an average of 660 metres above sea level. Only 11 percent lies lower than 200 metres and 42% is even higher than 1200 metres. Madrid is the highest capital of Europe with 670 metres.

The highest mountain of the Sierra Nevada in Andalusia is the Mulhacen (3481) and it is the highest mountain of the Spanish main land (only Tenerife’s mountain is higher with 3707 metres). The variety of landscapes in Spain is huge because of these mountains and the different climates.

With some 4,000 kilometres of coast line and the soft warm climate the sunny beaches of Spain are visited by millions of tourists every year. Spain has its border to these seas:

- Mediterranean Sea in the East and South
- Cantabria Sea in the North
- Atlantic Ocean in the West and South-West

Andalusia has the following costas:

- Costa de la Luz (province of Cadiz and Huelva, from Portugal to Tarifa, the most Southern point of Andalusia and sometimes they also say Algeciras).
- Costa del Sol (province of Malaga, from Manilva close to Marbella in the South-West). The Eastern part of the province of Malaga is called ‘la Axarquia’). Nerja is the most Eastern town from the Malaga province, la Axarquia and the Costa del Sol.
- Costa Tropical (province of Granada, from La Herradura till Adra).
- Costa de Almeria (province of Almeria, from Adra till Mojacar).
