Plaza Cavana, Plaza Cantarero (the ‘orange square’), Plaza de Andalucia, Plaza Balcon de Europa, Plaza Parque Verano Azul, Plaza Ermita. Nerja has lots of nice authentic squares, but Plaza (Fabrica) de los Cangrejos is in our opinion really the nicest and not just because our own restaurant Bagels & Tapas is located here! The square offers lots of green plus flowers and from here you have a great view of one of the most important beaches, Playa Torrecilla, where you can also rent sun beds and parasols. It’s a popular route for walkers to walk from the centre to the West (Playazo beach and hotel Marinas de Nerja). Also the the horse carriages start their rides from here (30 euros per ride) since they have been moved from the Balcon de Europa. In summer holidays there’s entertainment like open air cinema, musical performances and dance groups (flamenco). And for children in this period there’s a jumping castle and a giant trampoline. The popular Plaza de los Cangrejos on the end of Avenida Castilla Perez (close to the RIU Monica hotel) also plays an important role in the catholic celebration of Virgen del Carmen midway through July. The night before the party the city offers visitors free sardines that are roasted on the Petanque-track (kind of Jeu de Boules). The next day the statue of the virgin is brought in procession to the sea for a nightly tour by rowing boat. Carmen is the saint of the fishermen so she is honoured with lots of enthusiasm. Especially for tourists that stay in the east of Nerja (Capistrano) it’s really worth while to walk a little further than just the Balcon de Europa to this romantic square, which -by the way- is named after an old lobster factory that used to be located here. Hungry or thirsty holiday makers can choose from 10 restaurants on the terraces on the side of the square. Nice for both summer and winter.
