Festivities and holidays in Nerja and surroundings 2010 

No better way to really get to know the Spanish than to visit a traditional festival during your holiday...

1 January: New Years Eve (Noche Viejo) TIP!
On the Balcony of Europe at 12 with music, fireworks, cava (Spanish champagne) and 12 grapes for prosperity in every month of the coming year. Around this time of year Nerja is beautifully decorated. 

5-6 January: Three Kings, Nerja

15-16 January: San Anton
Maro (fireworks & procession)

12-14 February: Carnival (see our photos) TIP!
Lots of nice costumes, colours, music and a street parade (also see our photos) 

28 February: Pedal day

11-13 March: Nerja Flamenco Festival

29 March / 4 April: Easter (Semana Santa) TIP!

All kinds of typical Spanish processions which always attract a lot of visitors (also see our photos).

18 April: Residents Day
Day with food, music and a lot of information from about 30 stands from different organizations within Nerja.

3 May: Cruces de Mayo
Crosses maid of flowers which are put on the houses, with dance, music and local delicacies

14-15 May: Romeria de San Isidro TIP!
Cheerful pilgrims tour for the saint of the farmers from the Balcony of Europe to Maro. Big party with a lot of folklore, traditional clothing, carriages, horses, oxes. The outside party already starts the night before at the Nerja Caves (see our photos).

12-15 June: Feria (local festival) of Frigiliana

23 June: Night of Saint John (Noche de San Juan) TIP!
Nightly beach party to celebrate the longest day and the beginning of the summer. At 12 there’s a dive into the sea with fireworks. A lot of people camp on the beach (normally this is not permitted) and have barbecues (also see our photos). 

9-10 July: Verbena de San Cristobal, Nerja

15-16 July: Virgen Carmen (Virgen del Carmen) TIP!
Saint of the sea and fishermen. The statue is being carried around in a procession and the track partly goes by boat between Plaza de los Cangrejos and the Balcony of Europe.

20-24 July: Festival of Dance and Music
In the Nerja Caves with flamenco and classical music. Tickets must be ordered in advance and aren’t cheap.

July: Jazz Festival Almunecar

14 August: Fiesta de Noche Blanca
Nerja, Burriana Beach

15 August: Wine Night (Noche del Vino)
In Competa (15 kilometres from Nerja), yearly wine festival 

27 August: Day of the Tourist
 
8-11 September: Feria (local festival) of Maro
 
19 September: Day of the Tourist (Balcon de Europa)

2-5 October: Feria (local festival) of Torrox

8-12 October: Feria (local festival) of Nerja TIP!
Popular yearly festival with fair, market, shows, fireworks, a miss election and mostly… a lot of party. Also the end of the warm tourist season (see our photos). 

26-29 August: Festival NerjaDanza

31 October: Maroween

11-13 November: Festival Nerjajazz

22 December - 6 January: Christmas activities
