Nerja Caves |

The Cuevas de Nerja are situated 4 kilometers from the centre of Nerja, some 700 meters from the coast in the village of Maro, which belongs to Nerja. Here you find the thickest fusion of a stalactite and a stalagmite of Europe with a diameter of 18 meters (Guinness Book of Records 1989). The caves are in the top 5 attractions of Spain and is visited bij lots of holiday makers.
The tour takes about 1.5 hours (+/- 1 km) and you don't need a personal guide. It’s not a large tour, but it is very beautiful. Unfortunately it’s not a recommendation for people who have trouble walking many steps.
In the cave they found remainings from the Paleolic period 30.000 years ago. Only a small part can be visited by the public. Sometimes classical concerts take place in the 30 meters high main hall which can contain more than 800 visitors (see chapter Festivities). The caves only have been discovered in 1959 by 5 kids from Maro. One of them (‘Ayo’) has a popular chiringuito (fish restaurant) on the beach of Burriana. The monument at the entrance is a reminder of the discovery. Above the caves there is a childrens’ playground with a lot of shade and you find benches and tables for a nice picnic.
