Balcony of Europe

HistoryNerja Caves

In the centre of Nerja you find the ‘Balcon de Europa’, a viewing point on a cliff in the sea (23 meters above sea level). Both day and night it attracts lots of visitors and in summer there are a lot of artists who make some money as a painter, musician or living statue. Under the balcony is a restaurant wit fabulous views although, by the way, is not famous for it’s good kitchen. You really shouldn't miss Balcon de Europa during your holiday!

You’ll see an impressive avenue of king palm trees and on both sites stand 2 old cannons which state that the viewing point used to be a fortress in 1812. The fortress was torn down by the Spanish – together with their ally, Great Britain – to prevent it from being take over by Napoleon during the war with the French.

On the viewing point you’ll also find a statue of King Alfonso XII. When he visited the town after the devastating earth quake of 1884, he was so impressed by the beautiful views that he officially named it the ‘Balcon de Europa’ (the balcony of Europe).

On the other side of the promenade lies a square with the El Salvador church. From the square you can take a ride in a horse carriage for about half an hour. On this square (below the arch of the town hall) also lies the tourist office (tel. 0034 – 952 521 531). From the next square (Plaza de la Cavana) a little tourist train departs frequently and takes you on a trip through Nerja.
