Nerja is situated on the foothills of the Sierra Amijara and the Sierra Nevada and because of this the coast has a lot of cliffs and beaches. The town lies on a plateau above sea level. The famous viewing point Balcon de Europa (The balcony of Europe) offers a spectacular view over the coast. It is located on the large cliff in the centre of Nerja. The surroundings are typical Andalusian.
The highest mountain behind Nerja - de Navachica - is 1.832 metres high. There are 2 rivers, Chillar in the west and Maro in the east. In the summer you can walk through these rivers (knee height) to see waterfalls and areas of natural beauty.
Because of the subtropical climate there’s always been a lot of agriculture in this area. Almost everything grows here. From mangos, tomatoes, cucumbers and avocados to oranges, peaches, papaya, grapes and melons. Of course you can also find olives, almonds and some local fruits. In winter and summer the mountains are green and filled with flowers but in summer plants have to depend on morning fog, so in high season it tends to get drier (but still less than other parts of the Costa del Sol).
