The village of Maro belongs to Nerja and has about 800 inhabitants. Just like Nerja it lies on the coast, about 4 kilometres to the East. You will find the Nerja Caves and the remains of the old Roman town, Detunda in Maro. There’s also a camping site.

There are a few restaurants and a church (Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas from the beginning of the 17th century). The village also has a few pretty beaches as Alberguillas en Cantarriján (for nudists). The beaches and cliffs of Maro, right up to the mountain of Cerro Gordo are protected wildlife areas.

On the way to Maro – after the road to the highway – you can see to the left and right hand side the remains of the beautiful old Roman Aguilla aqueduct that also was used for the sugar factory which has been build in the 17th century.

In Maro on the area of the caves the cheerful folklore festival of ‘San Isidro’ is celebrated on the 15th of May. During the day the saint of San Isidro is brought from the Balcony of Europe to Maro in a big procession. A nice party with a lot of horses, traditional clothing and culture. Once the saint arrives there’s a huge outside party that goes on until 12 (it already starts the night before and this party goes on all night).
