Nerja is a friendly town on the Spanish Mediterranean coast in the autonom region of Andalusia. It has tourism, but it’s not the kind of place you would find big groups of bus tourists. It’s more a town for families who like to go to the beach during the day, have a nice dinner and walk a little through town in the evening. A lot of people come by themselves and there are a lot of holiday homes. Because of this and the fabulous climate Nerja has tourists pretty much throughout the whole year, although it is doubtlessly, much busier in the high season, June - August. That makes Nerja a perfect holiday destination for the whole family, from cheap last-minute flight in preseason or after season to a complete fly&drive holiday through Andalusia as a summer holiday. Nerja’s charm is partly due to its beautiful location on a plateau above the sea with all kinds of different beaches and coves. The combination of the beautiful ‘Balcon de Europa’ and the typical narrow Spanish streets in the old town gives Nerja a pleasant atmosphere. The two main shopping streets are Calle Cristo (with the post office ‘Correo’) and Calle Pintada, with a wide variety of interesting shops to browse in. Because the town has developed later than the coast west of Malaga, there is very little high rise. On one side Nerja has agricultural fields and on the other site it has a rocky protected environment with lovely viewing points and beaches. The coastline is about 16 kilometres long of which 13 kilometre are beaches. Nerja is also famous for its caves ‘Las Cuevas de Nerja’ which attract many tourists every year. You can find them in Maro, a small village which belongs to Nerja. Frigiliana is a characteristic old Moorish village - just 6 kilometres from Nerja in the mountains – with white houses and lovely streets. Make sure you don't miss it! Besides that Nerja is a perfect location from which you can start exploring nature, Andalusian culture and other cities like Granada, Seville, Cordoba, Ronda and Malaga. Amongst the Spanish this beach town is widely known for the popular television series 'El Verano Azul' (the blue summer) in the 80's. The Verano Azul park in Nerja West reminds of these series and here you can also find the original boat (El Barco) they used. The closest beach from the 3 Capistrano complexes is Burriana Beach, a comfortable wide beach with lovely fishing boats and a nice boulevard. On the beach the ‘chiringuitos’ prepare big flat pans with paella and they roast the sardines on the grill (mostly pierced on a bamboo stick). You can’t see Burriana from the centre but you can get there by foot through a steep pass way close to the Parador (this is one of the protected state hotels). On this beach they do a lot of water sports (diving, water bicycles, water scooters etc) The biggest beach in the centre is Torrecilla Beach, close to which you can also find our restaurant Bagels & Tapas. Recently, Nerja has finally been given permission for the new yacht harbour and Torrox still has plans for its own golf court. The Nerja market is held on Tuesday morning and on Sunday morning there's a flea market in the new part of town (just follow the signs at the roundabout above Burriana Beach). |
