After our holiday in Spain in August 2004 we decided to take the big step. Leaving family, friends, house, own company and office job, the Dutch language and all securities back in Holland to start a new life on the sunny Andalusian coast. The last 10 years in Rotterdam we led a happy life. But still: the idea of a sunnier and less stressful life with being outdoors much more (and no long days behind the computer) kept tempting. At the same time we realised that Spain’s not perfect and we’ll have to adapt to the good and bad sides of this country and it’s inhabitants. But still, after every Mediterranean holiday we always had the feeling we’d really feel at home…
With its relatively long tourist season, the South of Spain was an interesting place for us to settle. In January 2005 we made a trip along the coast from Alicante to Marbella and during this tour we really fell for Nerja. In March 2006 we finally moved. The first half we took a ‘sabbatical’ and followed Spanish classes for 20 hours a week (in Rotterdam we already did one year). In October we found a suitable location for our restaurant. With the help of a ‘gestor’, an engineer and a construction company we refurbished the place and finally we could open the doors to our clients in May 2007. We worked in our restaurant Bagels & Tapas with lots of joy and it has given us a tremendous experience. In 2011 we sold the business, because it was time for new chanlanges.
In 2008 our lovely daughter Donna was born and we moved to the country side. All together our lives get quite busy (especially in summer because of the longer opening hours), but we still don’t feel homesick and we don’t regret our choice. We feel really happy here.
