Cómpeta (4,000 inhabitants) is a quiet and lovely white village 22 km inland from Nerja in the Malaga province. It is located at an altitude of about 650 meters and several rivers flow through it (including the Rio Verde). The highest mountain is of the neighbor nature area La Maroma with an altitude of 2.066 meters.

Hiking and outdoor
Cómpeta is the starting point for many hiking and biking excursions and is recommended for outdoor leisure and nature lovers because of the adjacent nature reserves. For example, you can hike in the protected natural park Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama of 40,000 hectares that stages out until Frigiliana and Nerja. There are 9 official walking routes, including the Old Silk Road that ran through the limestone landscape to Granada.
Competa wine and Noche del Vino
In addition, just like Nerja, Torrox and Frigiliana, Competa is part of the Axarquia Sun and Wine Route (Ruta del Sol y Vino). The town produces wine and sugar cane syrup (miel de caña). Noche del Vino, the night of wine, is always celebrated on 15 August on the Plaza Almijara village square. In the afternoon at Plaza de la Vendimia, grapes are mashed in the traditional way and without a doubt, there is more than enough opportunity to taste the delicious locally-produced wines. The road to Cómpeta (via Torrox Pueblo) is very winding, so make sure you get back before dark or book a hotel / B&B.

Festival San Sebastian
On January 24, winter is brightened up by the Catholic celebration of San Sebastian. Ironically, this is a saint who came to a particularly macabre end… In the morning there is a musical tour of the village with the statue and after that, there are some small-scale culinary and music festivities in the center.
In Competa there is also a museum restaurant in the area of wine Calle Constitucion (tel: 952 553 314).

Tip: If you love wine and are still in Competa, combine your outing with a visit to the leading Bodegas Bentomiz in closeby village Sayalonga for an enjoyable and informative wine tasting (with or without luxury tapas). In Competa itself there are also bodegas that you can visit (Luis Picante y Almijara).
